This offering from Lost Whiskey Club is the result of an experiment gone right. Due to a shortage of barrels in 2014, this high rye bourbon mash bill was barreled into once used bourbon barrels. We aged these barrels for about 4 years before trying the whiskey. It was very light, crisp and refreshing, but just wasn’t what we were looking for. We decided to age a small amount for a year in a brand-new oak barrel with a lighter char. After a few months we knew we were onto something. We got our hands on some new oak barrels with a number 3 char from the Speyside Cooperage in Atkins VA. We re-barreled each one while lowering the proof as close to bottling proof as possible. We aged them an additional 5 years. The result is a perfectly balanced whiskey with the deep barrel flavors one would expect, without the over-oaked finish that can often accompany older whiskies. Bottled at 100 proof, it’s the perfect blend of heat, rich spices, and a finish all fine whiskey should deliver. We don’t have many barrels of this offering, so grab it while you can.
